  7. The working group met for 3 half-day sessions.  The first two were
  8. editing sessions for the architecture draft paper that will be out this
  9. month.  The third was planned as an open informational session, but the
  10. open steering group meeting was taking place at the same time and took
  11. away our audience.

  13. The agenda of the editing session was the last section of the
  14. architecture paper:  defining the first step in an evolution path to
  15. implementing the entire protocol.
  16.  
  17. For the first phase, we chose a simplified virtual gateway protocol in
  18. which only two border gateways participate.  We discussed the policy
  19. gateway to policy gateway protocol which runs among policy gateways
  20. inside an Administrative Domain.  It was felt that this is an essential
  21. protocol for a first phase implementation.  The mechanism for
  22. disseminating data, including electing a policy gateway spokesman,
  23. determining when data should be sent, and the mechanisms for limiting
  24. the extent of its flow, were also determined to be essential.  A route
  25. query would allow experimentation with policy routes and validation
  26. without actually implementing the automated part of policy validation,
  27. etc.  Finally, we discussed a mixed environment, when source routes
  28. could be installed at 'tack' points, while the gateways in-between are
  29. doing routing as usual.
